Building Omaha Joins the Fight to Stamp Out Hunger

1 in 10 Americans face hunger every day; and it’s worse in Nebraska.

According to Feeding America, 1 in 7 Nebraskans face hunger, and a sobering 1 in 5 children do. Our state’s food insecurity rate is 12.2%; the national rate is 11.2%. The cost of what it would take for these hungry individuals to satisfy their hunger is a whopping $187,107,000.

These are our neighbors, our co-workers, and their families.

At Building Omaha, we believe it’s not enough to simply sympathize and wish it were different. The shock we feel compels us to action.

So, united in the spirit of service, Building Omaha has joined forces with the U.S. Postal Service to Stamp Out Hunger.

Each year on the second Saturday of May, The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) leads a nationwide food drive called Stamp Out Hunger. Fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands participate. Since its inception 30 years ago, more than 1.82 billion pounds of food have been collected and distributed to those experiencing hunger.

Participation is easy:

  1.  Determine if your area is covered by a participating NALC branch or rural office by searching the NALC website or contacting your local post office.
  2. Collect healthy, nonperishable, low-sodium, low-sugar items, such as pasta, cereal, oatmeal, canola and vegetable oils, peanut and other nut butters, canned beans, canned fruit, canned vegetables, soup, tuna, canned meats, and jarred sauces.
  3. Place items in a bag.
  4. Leave the bag by your mailbox for your postal employee to collect.

This is just one way Building Omaha is committed to positively impacting the community in which its members live and work. Through such programs like Thursday Night Lights and Bags of Fun, educational partnerships with OPS, and athletic partnerships with the UNO Mavs, Building Omaha has a history of dedication to our city.

Come May 10, help us Stamp Out Hunger. You can also make a monetary donation with the United Way of the Midlands Stamp Out Hunger. And if you or someone you know suffers from food insecurity, there are resources that can help. To find support, call 211 or visit ne211.org.

Together, we can create a stronger, hunger-free Omaha.
