Building Omaha Scholarship Program Builds Better Future for Student-Athletes

Community involvement is central to Building Omaha’s mission.  And nothing screams “hometown pride” like high school football.  That’s why Building Omaha is proud to announce that the popular Thursday Night Lights program has been a success this fall.

Thursday Night Lights is the only locally produced broadcast of area football games.  Airing from 7:00-9:30 PM on The CW Omaha, it showcases each week’s biggest matchups as selected by local athletic directors.

But Thursday Night Lights does not just celebrate the high school football season.  It is a scholarship program that recognizes our city’s standout student-athletes.  All sports are represented, and athletes from all metro high schools are contenders for the scholarship.

Each week, two nominees are honored as a Scholar-Athlete of the Week.  As such, they receive a plaque during the weekly IBEW/NECA Thursday Night Lights spot, and their achievements are highlighted in a pre-taped segment that airs during the game.

All Scholar-Athlete of the Week honorees are then eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.  The winner, selected by a panel of judges, is awarded a $3,000 scholarship for his or her future education.  The prize can be used for college tuition or trade school costs, such as Building Omaha’s award-winning apprenticeship training program.

This season’s Thursday Night Lights segments featured the testimony of Building Omaha apprentices who shared their electrical education experiences and excitement about their career within the electrical industry.

Building Omaha is committed to making the metro area a better place to live and work.  It is proud to contribute to the city’s school systems and support student-athletes, which, in conjunction with KPTM’s high school sports programs, offers $4 million-plus in donations and scholarships.

Building Omaha is grateful for the community’s support in making Thursday Night Lights such a success year after year. Stay tuned for the announcement of the Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and set your calendars for next year’s season!
